In 2001, the International Year of Volunteers, volunteer firefighters were presented with medals to honour their service to their communities.

The UN has officially designated 2011 as the International Year of Volunteers +10 (IYV +10) and the UFBA - with support from the New Zealand Fire Service Commission - will mark the occasion by once again presenting medals and / or bars to all volunteers who are eligible to receive these awards.
