History

The Upper Hutt Volunteer Fire Brigade was formed in 1914 to serve the needs of the small rural settlement of Upper Hutt. In 1936 another brigade was formed at the Trentham Military Camp, this was essentially a permanent service & both brigades worked as individual units

As the Upper Valley grew, it was decided that a more uniformed service was required. So in 1958 Trentham Camp Brigade & the Upper Hutt Fire Brigade came under the umbrella of the Upper Hutt Fire Board & moved into their new premises at the central fire station on Fergusson Drive, where the current station stands today.

Further restructuring has taken place since then, & today we come under the New Zealand Fire Service Commission. However we maintain a fire appliance to supplement the permanent service.

Today, with almost 100 years behind us, the past & present members who have served the community of Upper Hutt can justifiably be proud of their record in the finest tradition of the fire service.
