2010 Open day

On the 28th March the UHVFB held their first Open day in over 5 years. A day for the public to come & check out the station & find out what it takes to become a volunteer. By all accounts it was a great day. The sun was shining & the crowd enjoyed the displays. We aimed to run a display every 45min & thanks to the paid staff from around the Hutt Valley & UHVFB members I think we succeeded.

To kick off the day we had the kitchen fire demonstration run by the paid staff. This demo illustrates how dangerous it is to pour water onto a fat/oil fire.

Next up was the Crash Fire team from Wellington Airport, They showed the public the mighty fire power of their water canons on Rescue 1.

Once the drill ground had dried up a bit we wheeled out our rubbish bin & set it alight for the first of two demos. This is a fairly common type of fire that we attend. The crew simulated arriving at the incident in the appliance then one crew member donned his BA while the other guys rolled out the hose and assessed the situation, then went in & extinguished the fire fairly quickly.

Trentham station is home to both paid staff & volunteers. The paid crew found themselves an old car to simulate a MVA (motor vehicle accident) and demonstrated how they use their cutting gear to rescue the passenger trapped inside. Once the roof was removed members from the Wellington Free Ambulance attended to the passenger.

We would like to say a big thanks to everybody who helped make this possible, including Wellington Free Ambulance, Life Flight Trust, Upper Hutt Rural Fire Force, Wellington Crash Fire, Avalon, Rimutaka & Trentham Stations.

We would like to thank the following companies for helping to make the day a success
